The intent of Ag Research investments is to encourage the growth and development of the value added agriculture industry through research and development in a number of selected areas including:
Environment and Nutrient Management
Research and development projects and programs in bio-waste material which add value to the environment and nutrient management industries. The primary objective is to create positive revenue streams from ag-related biowastes, such as the development of new and improved value-added products using by-products from manure, rendering material, dead stock from specific animal by-products and from food processing wastes.
Examples of these products include energy, fertilizer, peat replacement products and recyclable water.
Food Ingredient and Fermentation Products
Research and development projects and programs in food ingredients and fermentation products. Projects should be related to the development of products, processes and technological innovations and are expected to eventually result in the commercialization of novel value-added products using material derived from Alberta crops or livestock.
Products can include the following: i) edible oils, fats and emulsifiers, ii) fibres and pre-biotics, iii) starches, iv) food proteins and secondary metabolics.
Specified Risk Material
Research and development projects and programs, pre-commercialization activities and start-up activities in bio-waste material which create value from or find viable alternatives to specified risk materials (SRMs) derived from livestock processing operations in Alberta.
