CALGARY, AB – AVAC Ltd. is pleased to announce the appointment of Warren Bergen as President of AVAC Ltd. and Mark Carlson as Managing Partner of Verdex Capital Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of AVAC launched in Q4 2014. In their new roles, Mr. Bergen and Mr. Carlson will continue to foster and grow the reach of the group, focusing on investments in agricultural technology (Ag Tech) and early-stage angel co-investment opportunities.
“These appointments represent the next phase of AVAC’s evolution. Our historic support from the Governments of Alberta and Canada has helped AVAC to grow and mature. Moving forward the organization is transitioning to a venture capital group capable of raising third- party financing to invest in valued-added agri-business and agricultural technologies companies,” explained Dr. Rennie, Chairman of the Board of Directors of AVAC.
Mr. Bergen and Mr. Carlson have been with the organization for several years and have played important roles in shaping the strategic direction and management of the business. Mr. Bergen, formerly Vice President Corporate Development, has been with AVAC since 2011. Mr. Carlson has been with AVAC since 2009 and was formerly Vice President Investment. They will both report directly to the AVAC Board of Directors in their new roles. As a result of this reorganization, Dr. Michael Raymont, formerly President and CEO of AVAC, has stepped down from his interim role to pursue other interests.
“The Board of Directors wishes to thank Dr. Raymont for his significant contribution as a long-term director of AVAC and, most importantly, for his leadership in the transition that set the stage for AVAC’s partnership with Finistere Ventures LLC in the Finistere Ventures FVII Fund, which was launched in January 2015,” commented Dr. Rennie.

Alberta, Canada – AVAC Ltd., a private Canadian company that invests in promising early stage ventures, today announced the launch of their latest brand, Verdex Capital. Verdex Capital will focus on agricultural technology investments and opportunities.
Yesterday, November 19, 2014, Michael Raymont, AVAC President & CEO, presented the luncheon keynote about the need for Ag Tech and its impace on global food at the 2014 Agri Innovation Forum in Winnipeg, MB.
His presentation identified the global challenges to food production and the way in which agriculture and food technologies can help solve these impending issues. A number of these technologies such as vertical farming, plant yield technologies, sensors and big data management software, and synthetic biology are emerging commercially, promising to deliver many types of fresh, healthy foods close to their point of purchase and/or consumption.
Raymont provided the following reasons for investing in Ag Tech:
”Agriculture is big business. Small changes in yield and efficiency result in significant profits within the sector; it is where Ag Tech can be the catalyst to make a change achievable. Global food and life science corporations are beginning to realize the potential that lies in Ag Tech and are starting to move on strategic mergers and acquisitions, making it a prudent time for investors in the space,” said Dr. Raymont.
The only event of its kind in Canada, The Agri Innovation Forum is dedicated to showcasing the highest potential emerging, growth, and established agri-businesses. The annual conference promotes constructive deal flow between agri-entrepreneurs, corporate strategic players, and investors from across North America.
Michael Raymont has extensive experience in the investment and technology commercialization space. He has worked all over the world helping companies manage their venture investments, and has delivered over 200 publications and presentations primarily focused on innovation, technology commercialization, and economic development.
